This person was born in London, UK, and moved to the USA at the age of two. This person attended Wright Junior College in Chicago, USA, prior to winning a partial scholarship to the University of Chicago, USA, where they completed their B.S. in under a year. Upon graduating, this chemist’s partner presented them with a book on hydrides of boron which set the tone for this person’s future research.

 

 

Their independent research career began at Wayne University, Michigan, USA, first as assistant then as associate professor. In 1947 they moved as professor to Purdue University, Indiana, USA, where they remained until their retirement in 1978. This chemist remained actively involved in research until their death in 2004.

During their career, they supervised 163 Ph.D. students and 190 postdoctoral fellows. They also authored eight books and nearly 1300 scientific publications. This chemist won numerous prestigious awards, including the Priestley Medal, the National Medal of Science and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
