65th Birthday: Erwin Flaschel

Professor Erwin Flaschel, Bielefeld University, Germany, celebrates his 65th birthday on April 19, 2014.

Erwin Flaschel studied chemistry at the Technical University Carolo–Wilhelmina, Braunschweig, Germany, and was awarded his Ph.D. for research into continuous reaction engineering with soluble enzymes from the Technical University Hanover, Germany, in 1976. In 1977, he was appointed as a research assistant in the group of Professor A. Renken at the Institute of Chemical Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland. He stayed at this institute until 1990 and held a number of different positions including lectuer and senior assistant. In 1990, he moved to the newly established Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bielefeld, and set up a research group that focused on fermentation technology, biocatalysis, and enzyme technology. He has stayed here ever since, holding the position of Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1992–1993.

Flaschel became a member of the Technik biologischer Prozesse (Biotechnology Processes) group of DECHEMA (Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology) Germany, in 2000 and has taken an active role in this society, being the chairman of the Technik biologischer Prozesse group from 2003–2009 and becoming a board member of the biotechnology section of DECHEMA in 2009.

He is a member of the editorial board of Engineering in Life Sciences.
