Richard Zare, Stanford University, USA, discusses his editorial on why the West should help China develop its science.

Professor Zare is renowned for his research in the area of laser chemistry, resulting in a greater understanding of chemical reactions at the molecular level. By experimental and theoretical studies he has made seminal contributions to our knowledge of molecular collision processes and contributed very significantly to solving a variety of problems in chemical analysis.

He is a member of the Editorial Boards for a range of journals including Angewandte Chemie and ChemPhysChem and was the chairman of the International Evaluation Committee of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
