🎥 Short Personal Insights

Crossing borders means far more than moving between countries. It is about stepping beyond disciplinary comfort zones, learning new things, and engaging with ideas that challenge established ways of thinking.

Katharina Käfer (Nachrichten aus der Chemie, the membership magazine of the GDCh) and Vera Köster (ChemistryViews) spoke with conference participants about Crossing Borders at the GDCh’s Science Forum Chemistry in Karlsruhe, Germany, and recorded short videos, that reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the community.

🌍 Crossing Borders

The videos reflect a community shaped by diversity in background, career stage, culture, research focus. Some speak of geographic mobility as a catalyst for creativity, while others highlight intellectual border-crossing, or reframing problems through unfamiliar perspectives. What unites these stories is a shared belief that progress happens at the interfaces.

Crossing borders matters because today’s scientific challenges—energy, health, communication, sustainability—do not respect neat boundaries. By embracing diversity of people and ideas, the community strengthens not only scientific excellence, but also openness, collaboration, and mutual understanding. Together, these voices show that crossing borders is not an exception in science—it is its driving force.
