Borealis is investing €49 million to expand production of Borstar® Nextension polypropylene (PP) at its Burghausen site in Germany. The PP is made using advanced catalysts that allow much more precise control over how the polymer chains are formed and how comonomers are incorporated into the polymer structure. The investment will increase availability of next-generation single-site PP (ssPP) grades with higher purity, better processability, and improved performance for packaging, healthcare, mobility, and fiber applications.

The investment also supports circular design. Borstar Nextension PPBy enables integrating a tailored combination of performance properties into a single PP material. Using a single material makes products easier to recycle because you don’t have to separate layers of different plastics, which supports circular design. The high-performance monomaterials allow material substitution in multilayer structures. Borstar Nextension PP helps reduce weight, improve recyclability, and meet EU packaging regulations (EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)), including the goal of 100% recyclable packaging by 2030.
