Single Article Type for Primary Research

Author: Chemistry Europe

The publication behavior of chemists has changed a lot in the last 20 years or so, especially since electronic publishing has become the standard for the dissemination of research results. Today, there is generally comprehensive Supporting Information available for published papers.

Traditionally, authors used to write a small number of (short) Communications summarizing key findings, each of which was followed up by a Full Paper reporting the complete study, including experimental details. This habit is no longer common, and both Communications and Full Papers are expected to add to the existing literature and to contain all necessary detail for others to understand and replicate the work. The difference in length of Communications and Full Papers mostly depends on how long the Experimental Section is; the text bodies of both article types hardly differ these days. Moreover, both article types can be published equally fast, so the argument in favor of a Communication as a brief report on results of high significance and urgency that deserves particularly rapid publication is no longer valid.

For this reason, Chemistry Europe titles will publish just one type of primary research paper from now on – the Research Article. This gives our authors the flexibility and freedom to write their research how it needs to be written, submitting a research article of any length. Any previous submissions will be processed as submitted.
