In the first issue of 2017, Y. Xia et al. review the seed-mediated growth of colloidal metal nanocrystals. How is this method superior in the production of well-defined sizes, shapes, structures, and compositions? H. Braunschweig et al. discuss electron-precise boron–boron bonds. What is their history, what methods of synthesis are there, and what is their reactivity?

In a Minireview, S. Bähr and M. Oestreich discuss catalytic Friedel–Crafts C–H silylation; the Highlights deal with radical enantioselective C(sp3)–H functionalization (Q. Lu, F. Glorius) and metal carbene insertion reactions of unactivated C(sp3)–H bonds (M. Peña-López, M. Beller). In his Editorial, P. Gölitz presents activities around the 150th anniversary of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), flawed metrics and their use, and introduces new board members.

In the Communications section, F. Shi et al. present a design and enantioselective construction of axially chiral naphthyl-indole skeletons (see picture). Y. Urano et al. describe the development of chemical tools to monitor and control isoaspartyl peptide methyltransferase activity. T. Hellman Morton et al. looked at the low-frequency CH stretch vibrations of free alkoxide ions and M. Malischewski and K. Seppelt solved the crystal structure of the pentagonal-pyramidal hexamethylbenzene dication to find a hexacoordinated carbon atom.
