In this issue, E. M. Carreira et al. review enantioselective chemo- and biocatalysis as partners in retrosynthesis. How can a better understanding of these two complementary methods’ challenges and opportunities be achieved? The Highlight deals with mesoionic carbenes as privileged ligands in photochemistry (D. Sarkar and L. Suntrup). P. Heretsch looks back on Bürgenstock Conference 2017 with the motto “chemistry for design”.

In the Communications section, H. Wang et al. describe water transport with ultralow friction through partially exfoliated nanosheet membranes (see picture). T. Clark et al. point out the differences between G-protein-stabilized agonist–GPCR complexes and their nanobody-stabilized equivalents. D. S. Wright et al. present a modular approach to inorganic phosphazane macrocycles, and D. B. Werz et al. succeeded in the ring-opening 1-amino-3-aminomethylation of donor–acceptor cyclopropanes via 1,3-diazepanes.
