Professor Emeritus Christoph Rüchardt, University of Freiburg, Germany, passed away on February 22, 2018. His research focused on organic chemistry, especially on reactive intermediates such as carbocations and radicals, reaction mechanisms, and stereochemistry.
Christoph Rüchardt was born on August 10, 1929, in Munich, Germany. He studied chemistry at the University of Munich and at the University of Georgia, Athens, USA. He received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Rolf Huisgen in 1956. Rüchardt performed postdoctoral research with Paul Bartlett at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, and with John D. Roberts at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, USA. He completed his habilitation in Munich in 1963. He joined the University of Münster, Germany, in 1968 and moved to the University of Freiburg in 1972. He was the Head of the University from 1987 to 1991. Rüchardt retired from his post as Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1996.
Among other honors, Rüchardt received the Adolf von Baeyer Medal from the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) in 1983 and the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996. He was a Member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
