In this issue, R. D. Costa et al. discuss fluorescent proteins and white-light-emitting diodes in a Minireview. In a further Minireview, P. Naumov et al. summarize work on mechanically reconfigurable plastic and superelastic molecular crystals. The Highlight deals with anionic aluminium nucleophiles (A. Hinz, F. Breher). In an Essay, P. Laszlo points out the importance of keeping organic solvents dry.

In the Communications section, Z. Shi et al. describe the bottom-up construction of π-extended arenes by a palladium-catalyzed annulative dimerization of o-iodobiaryl compounds (see picture). E. Hänle and C. Richert succeeded in an enzyme-free replication with two or four bases, and D. Bonifazi et al. synthesized oxygen-doped molecular zig-zag ribbons.
