Angewandte Chemie 7/2012: Providing a Sense of Orientation

Author: Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Sounds relaxing, but is actually exciting: In a Review, W. Han and Z. Lin elucidate how ordered structures can be produced by controlled evaporative self-assembly: What can be learned from coffee rings? In a Minireview, G. C. Lloyd-Jones et al. discuss strategies for the deployment of racemic chiral catalysts. The Highlights deal with arynes in transition-metal-free multicomponent coupling reactions (S. S. Bhojgude and A. T. Biju) and fullerenes as neutral carbon-based Lewis acids (J. Iglesias-Sigüenza and M. Alcarazo).

In the Communications section, S. Takeuchi et al. present meter-long polymer-gel-encapsulated supramolecular strands, which can be used as templates on a substrate for the synthesis of conducting polymers thanks to their mechanical strength. P. Hu et al. rationalize the low CO2 selectivity of direct ethanol fuel cells by means of DFT calculations. M. Fändrich et al. elucidated the conformation of a toxic β-amyloid oligomer by using NMR spectroscopy, thereby contributing to understanding the structural basis of Alzheimer’s disease. R. Sessoli et al. investigated the magnetic anisotropy of a dysprosium/DOTA single-molecule magnet (see picture).
