Scientists at MIT have prepared rare and inherently unstable mononuclear complexes of Ru(I) and Os(I), which are the first such examples to be isolated and thoroughly characterized through structural, spectroscopic, and theoretical methods.

Recently, attention has been given to low-valent metalloradicals of the late second- and third-row transition metals because of their interesting spectroscopic properties and potential application in catalysis.

Jonas C. Peters, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA, and his team show evidence for the predominant radical character of the Ru(I) and Os(I) metals in these complexes by using a range of techniques including EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. An investigation into the reactivity of these metalloradical species reveals both one- and two-electron redox behavior.
