The chemist we are looking for is best known for his or her theoretical insight into organic chemistry. The person in question first studied architecture, but was convinced of switching to chemistry after listening to the lectures of a famous teacher.

This chemist's most important contribution has been honored by a special 25th anniversary celebration, and several stamps issued by European countries. A statue featuring the chemist in question has been erected on front of his or her chemical institute, financed by the dye industry in recognition of contributions to the field. Today, the statue is often humorously decorated by students. Several students of the chemist in question have gone on the win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
