This issue contains the Nobel lectures of the 2009 chemistry laureates A. Yonath, T. A. Steitz, and V. Ramakrishnan, who report first-hand the course of the discoveries of the structure and function of the ribosome. How do these cellular machines translate the genetic code into proteins?

This week’s Highlight deals with pentenoic acid pathways for cellulosic biofuels.

In the Communications section, K. Yamamoto et al. show how to visualize the lithium ion distribution during the work cycles of a lithium ion battery holographically. J. F. Corrigan et al. present a silver nanocluster with 36 ferrocenyl methylthiolate ligands. M. Waibel and N. Cramer introduce palladium-catalyzed arylating ring-opening reactions of norbornenols to allow access to highly substituted cyclohexenes, quinolines, and tetrahydroquinolines. J. D. Dunitz et al. succeeded in determining the solid-state structure of D-ribose.
