José Barluenga, University of Oviedo, Spain, has recently published his 35th article since 2000 in Angewandte Chemie and is the subject of this weeks author profile. In it he discusses the difficulties of establishing a research career in Spain in the 1970ies, the contribution of his students and his top five papers and why they are important.

“One may speculate that at the borderline of physics and biology there are still enormous possibilities to advance science, without missing our identity as chemists.”

His 35th paper in Angewandte was titled, “Sequential Five-Component Construction of the Cyclopenta[e][1,3]oxazine Skeleton using Stable 2-Azetine Derivatives.”
