Professor Heinrich Nöth, University of Munich, Germany, has passed away on June 26, 2015.
Professor Nöth’s research focused on the chemistry of main group elements (particularly of the element boron), hydride chemistry, and X-ray crystallography.
Heinrich Nöth studied chemistry at the University of Munich, Germany, and received his Ph.D. there in 1954. From 1955 to 1957, he worked as Research Officer at Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., Billingham, UK. He then returned to Munich, where he finished his habilitation in 1962. In 1965, Nöth became Associate Professor in Munich, and in 1966 Full Professor at the University of Marburg, Germany. He returned to Munich again in 1969 and remained there as Professor for Inorganic Chemistry until his retirement in 1996.
Professor Nöth served as President of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) twice, from 1988 to 1989 and from 1992 to 1993, and as Vice President for another three years. He was President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities from 1998 to 2005. Nöth was also a member of the the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and of the Academia Europaea.
Among other honors, Heinrich Nöth received the Alfred Stock Memorial Prize by the GDCh in 1976, the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 1991, the Boron of Americas Award by the Society of Boron Chemists in 2006, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009, and honorary doctorates from the Universities of Marburg, Germany, and Leeds, UK.
