Dr. Dorota Koziej, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, has been awarded the EurJIC–Wöhler Young Investigator Prize by the Wöhler Association for Inorganic Chemistry of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCH, German Chemical Society) and the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry.

The award recognizes an outstanding publication in the field of inorganic chemistry by a young scientist of any nationality who has completed a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry. It was presented at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum 2015 in Dresden, Germany, on September 1, 2015.

Dr. Koziej is honored for her article "Puzzling Mechanism behind a Simple Synthesis of Cobalt and Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles: In Situ Synchrotron X-ray Absorption and Diffraction Studies", published in Chemistry of Materials. Her research deals with the development of materials for energy-related applications, using in situ spectroscopic synchrotron methods and developing platforms for on-chip monitoring of nanoparticle crystallization.

Dorota Koziej received her Ph.D. from the University of Tübingen, Germany, and from the Silesian University of Technology, Poland. After post-doctoral research with Markus Niederberger at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, she received a Swiss National Foundation Fellowship to work in the group of David Weitz at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.

In her lecture at the Anorganischen Chemie Session of the Wissenschaftsforum 2015, Dorota first described the in situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption and diffraction techniques that she had developed in the prize-winning paper to elucidate the mechanism of the formation of nanoparticles. She then selected three very different examples to demonstrate the power of the in situ tools she had pioneered.
