Electrochemists can now examine the electrolyte-electrode interface on an atomic or molecular level by adopting techniques from surface science and scanning tunneling microscopes. This has lead to electrochemistry developing into a highly interdisciplinary research field, interacting with other sciences such as environmental chemistry, nanoscience, materials science, life sciences, and energy research.


To demonstrate the important role of modern electrochemistry, issue 13 of ChemPhysChem is a special issue dedicated to all aspects of electrochemistry. It includes 37 invited contributions by leading scientists and has been guest edited by Christian Amatore, Ecole Normale Supérieure, France, Dieter M. Kolb, University of Ulm, Germany, and Richard G. Compton, University of Oxford, UK.


The special issue is published concurrently with the 61st Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), Nice, France.
