Professor Bryan McCloskey, University of California, Berkeley, USA, has been awarded the Science Award Electrochemistry 2015 by BASF and Volkswagen. The award  is presented annually to outstanding scientists in the global academic research community. The aim is to foster exceptional scientific and engineering achievements in electrochemistry and to provide an incentive for the development of high-performance energy stores. The prize was presented at a ceremony in Tokyo, Japan, on October 28, 2015.


Professor McCloskey is honored for his research in the area of lithium-oxygen batteries. He has analyzed fundamental electrochemical processes in this type of battery by examining the stability of electrolytes and electrode materials. With this work, he has contributed to a deeper understanding of lithium-oxygen batteries. His research interests include electrochemical energy storage, as well as molecular and ionic transport through polymers.


Bryan McClosky studied chemical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, USA, and the University of Texas at Austin, both USA. He received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Benny Freeman in Austin in 2009. After postdoctoral research at the IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, CA, USA, he joined the University of California, Berkeley, as Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2014.
