Guess the Chemist (49)

Author: ChemViews

The scientist and explorer we are looking for this time is credited with the first scientific description of one of the precious metals. It was part of his or her account of the first major international scientific expedition, which was carried out to measure the Earth’s deviation from a perfect sphere. He or she was a naval officer and fought in the so-called “War of Jenkins’ Ear”.

Later, our scientist became a colonial officer and governor, first in Middle America, where he or she oversaw and managed quicksilver mines, and later in today’s United States.

Who are we looking for?
