World Metrology Day 2011

World Metrology Day 2011

Author: Holger Gerwig

May 20th is the World Metrology Day, aiming at global collaboration and uniformity of measurements. This year’s motto “Chemical Measurements for our life, our future” builds upon the theme of the International Year of Chemistry, an initiative of the genral assembly of the United Nations.

The German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) is nominated by the German National Metrology Institute (Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB), Braunschweig, as the designated institute for air pollutant measurements since 1999. This makes it the most important partner performing comparison measurements of traceability of air pollutants in Germany. It makes sure that regulated air pollutants all over Germany are measured with a comparable accuracy.

The measured data are the basis for regional air quality measurement informtaion, e.g., ozone air concentrations in summer. The data are updated daily and awailable for every region in Germany by videotext or internet (see links below).
