The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, Switzerland, has reached a new record for the number of spin-offs founded out of the university: 27 companies were founded in 2018. In the 2010s so far, the university had an average of 24 spin-offs per year, up from an average of 13 in the 2000s.

The spin-offs cover a range of subjects, with the largest number from the field of information and communication technology, and eight spin-offs developing products for the medical sector. For example, the founders are working on a new method of root canal treatment or on a simple and inexpensive positron emission tomography (PET) scanner for the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

The chemical fields are represented by spin-offs in chemistry, pharma, and nanotechnology. The university’s spin-offs were able to attract more than CHF 170 million (EUR 150 million) in capital in 2018. The institution actively supports founders and has its own podcast with episodes about entrepreneurship.
