Ocean-Bound Waste Converted to PC/PET Material

SABIC will convert plastic waste recovered from ocean-feeding waterways and inland areas within a 50 km radius of the ocean into a new recycled polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) compound under its Trucircle portfolio. The material will be mechanically recycled and converted into components for new consumer goods and electronics applications, such as TV remote controls and electronic razors. The company says the material also has the potential to be used in other industries in the future, such as automotive.

The new recycled material, called XENOY™ PC/PET, consists of at least 10% recycled ocean-bound PET blended with polycarbonate. According to an internal SABIC LCA study based on a resin grade with 20% recycled content, for every 1kT of product containing the ocean-bound recycled XENOY™ PC/PET compound, the equivalent of 24 million 0.5L PET disposable water bottles can potentially be removed from our oceans.
