BASF and Porsche to Develop High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery for Electric Cars

BASF has been selected by Cellforce Group, a joint venture between Porsche and Custom Cells, as the exclusive cell development partner for its next-generation lithium-ion battery.

BASF will supply high-energy HEDTM NCM cathode active materials that provide fast charging and high energy density in the high-performance battery cells. BASF operates production facilities for precursor cathode active materials in Harjavalta, Finland, and for cathode active materials in Schwarzheide, Germany. The company is aiming for the lowest carbon footprint along its supply chain from 2022.

The Cellforce group will produce the high-performance battery. Its battery production facility is scheduled to start operation in 2024 and will have an initial capacity of at least 100 MWh per year, supplying 1,000 motorsport and high-performance vehicles.

To close the loop, production waste from the Cellforce Group’s future battery plant will be recycled at BASF’s prototype battery recycling plant in Schwarzheide, Germany. Lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese are recycled in a hydrometallurgical process and reintroduced into the production process for cathode active materials.
