BASF and the Petroleum Institute (PI) collaborate to develop new processes for removing aggressive sulfur compounds from acid gases. Their research activities will focus on methods that show a favorable energy balance. One example is the use of membranes, which are being utilized today to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from acid gases. Another research target will be on exploring the use of adsorbents to develop methods with low energy consumption.

The PI was established in 2001 and is sponsored by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The institute focuses on engineering education and energy industry research, has 1200 students, 200 faculty, and has become a leading teaching and research institution in the Middle East. A major research facility, the PI Research Center (PIRC), is scheduled to open on the PI campus in 2014.

Sir, The H2S contamination is a problem ever since Natural gas discovery & associated drilling /production regimes.-coupled with CO,CO2, So2 .NoX etc. Number of reagents discovered & patented for this purpose since 2002. I happen to participate in Middwest oil-Expo exhibition with a Product Named -SULPHASPONGE- in April 2006 MUSCAT/OMAN.- and appraised companies, visitors etc; The ground situation is companies are happy to transport Gas with 17-30% H2S gas thru' pipeline at huge cost over distances of 20 or 30 km distances spending billions of dollars. In fact it should be possible to knock off H2S in a more safeway- and send the rest for refinery works. A review will bring the required Research Targets for meaningful applications. Dr TNV Raghavan
