Senior Editor

The Senior Editor is responsible for ensuring effective and financially successful product acquisition for and management of our future and existing international, US-based reference program in chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields, aiming for substantial growth of this portfolio. This includes the creation, acquisition, development and management of traditional and future content offerings in English language, maintenance and development of new author, editor and partner relationships with the international and national scientific community, monitoring of the market situation (e.g. the scientific development of the subject field, the offerings of competitors), and internal collaboration with marketing, sales, content enablement and content management colleagues. In addition, the Executive or Senior Editor will manage and supervise the chemistry and chemical engineering team in Hoboken.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Team and Strategy Responsibilities:
• Manage and supervise US-based chemistry and chemical engineering team and align US publishing activities with global strategy and best practises.
• Further develop other group managers publishing/subject plans as well as on their implementation, including management of existing partnerships and suggestions for acquisition of new ones.
Content Acquisition:
• Identify authors/editors/subjects and successfully acquire financially potent products in alignment with annual acquisition targets and communicated business strategy for own contract targets and those of team members.
• Be the go-to person for societies and partnerships aligned with the US based portfolio and improve current relationships and outcomes.
• Create necessary input for decision-making on new projects for the US based team (book proposals, reviews, P&L for new projects, marketing information etc.) and author/editor contracts.
• Day to day communication with authors/editors/partners around already acquired and/or published products, and internal communication with own team.
• Day to day communications and responsibilities with other Wiley colleagues in order to efficiently and successfully manage, publish, market and sell the products.
• Act as representative of Wiley on scientific conferences and visits of universities, institutes, and organizations.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
• University Degree (Masters) in chemistry, chemical engineering or related disciplines.
• Product and business acquisition experience; track record of successful book acquisition results in chemical engineering, chemistry and related disciplines
• Management experience of small teams
• Strong networking and relationship management skills; self-confident manners, broad subject knowledge in relevant subject fields
• Product acquisition and development skills (understanding of acquisition and publishing processes and demands, understanding of financial implications and contract terms; monitoring, gathering and utilizing market and subject knowledge, timely decision making, knowledge and/or interest in new media)
• Planning and development skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal relationship skills (internally, externally), self-confidence, self-motivated, ability to manage high and own workloads, good judgement, ability to be managed from different location, excellent time-management skills, resilience
• Ability and willingness to travel globally.
DESIRABLE:
• Ph.D. and/or post doc in these subject areas.

Internship

Internship at ChemistryViews.orgInterested in science communication, like to fine-tune your writing skills, and supporting editorial staff in all activities leading to publication?

We offer 4-8 weeks internships. You will need a qualification in a science discipline or chemical engineering, have good English-language skills (written and spoken), as well as good computer, organizational and interpersonal skills. Applicants currently studying a journalism-related degree at University level are also encouraged to apply.
