Our ChemPubSoc Europe Advent Calendar highlights articles from magazines of the ChemPubSoc Europe societies. Anales de Química is the membership magazine of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (Real Sociedad Española de Química, RSEQ). Professor Miguel A. Sierra (pictured) is Editor-in-Chief of Anales de Química.

Miguel A. Sierra chose La composición química de la atmósfera primitiva del planeta Tierra (The chemical composition of the primitive atmosphere of planet Earth) by Jorge Pla-García and César Menor-Salván.

Why have you selected this article?

I chose this article because it summarizes one of the current challenges of chemistry: to understand the origin and evolution of Earth’s atmosphere during the Precambrian and its role in life's origin, together with a discussion on controversial and unsolved questions. In addition, the article was the cover page of issue 1 of 2017 of Anales de Química.

What is the article about?

The atmosphere we breathe is the result of changes and interactions where geology, incoming extraterrestrial objects, and the evolution of life play key roles. This article summarizes the current scientific view of the origin and evolution of Earth’s atmosphere during the Precambrian and the major events of its evolution sorted chronologically, including a review about controversial points, their implications, and a discussion of the open unsolved questions.

Can you say a few words about yourself, please?

Currently, I am a full professor of Organic Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid (UCM), working in hydrogen production using metal-modulated mimics of hydrogenases and conductivity in metalla-DNAs.
