Professor Klaus Roth, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, celebrates his 70th birthday on January 30, 2015.

Born in 1945, Klaus Roth studied chemistry at the Freie Universität Berlin (Free University of Berlin, FUB), Germany, and received his Ph.D. there in 1973 under the supervision of Dieter Rewicki. After research stays at the Institute for Medical Research in London, UK, and the University of California in San Francisco, USA, he returned to Berlin in 1989 as Professor. From 1991 to 1999, he was Director of the Dahlem Conferences, an initiative of FUB to promote interdisciplinary cooperation.

Roth’s research interests are nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging techniques. As an author, he specializes in bringing the curious, exciting, and everyday aspects of chemistry to a wide audience – with a great sense of humor and an investigative spirit.

As one of our longest-running contributors, Klaus Roth has authored a very popular series of articles in ChemViews Magazine on the chemistry of food, drink, and common household items. They have been published in German in the journal Chemie in unserer Zeit, as well as in his books. Roth has been awarded the prize for authors of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) in 2008.
