Luigi Mondello, Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Messina, Italy, will serve as President of the Società Chimica Italiana (SCI, Italian Chemical Society) from January 2026 to December 2028. He succeeds Gianluca Farinola, Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, Italy, who will contribute to the Executive Committee of the Society for three years as Past‑President; the Executive Committee also includes two Vice Presidents.
A long‑standing figure in the national chemical community, Mondello has held multiple leadership roles within SCI, including President of the Division of Analytical Chemistry (2022–2024) and Vice President of the same division (2019–2021).
His presidency is expected to focus on strengthening SCI’s national and European presence and on fostering integration between academia, research institutions, and the chemical industry.
Luigi Mondello studied chemistry at the University of Messina, Italy, and graduated there in 1991. He began his academic career as a Researcher in Food Chemistry (1996–2000) and later served as Associate Professor of Food Chemistry (2000–2005) at the University of Messina and then as Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the same University (2025).
He has also worked in industry and held ministerial positions, including as a member of the Biocidal Commission of the Ministry of Health and of the Department of Test Laboratories at the Italian Accreditation Agency (ACCREDIA).
He is co-president and co-founder of the “Messina Institute of Technology (MeIT)”.
His research interests include high-resolution chromatography techniques and the development of hyphenated and multidimensional “comprehensive”, with particular emphasis on coupling with mass spectrometry and their application to the study of constituents and contaminants of complex natural matrices, the design of dedicated software for the processing of two-dimensional data and spectral libraries. He is a member of several illustrious institutions, including the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna, Section I, Mathematical, Physical, Chemical, and Geological Sciences and the IFEAT Scientific Panel of Experts.
Luigi Mondello was honored with multiple awards, including the GC×GC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, the Golay Award at the International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography in 2017, the Robert Kellner Lecture Award from the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) in 2017, the Herbert J. Dutton Award from the American Oil Chemists’ Society in 2019, the A.J.P. Martin Medal from The Chromatographic Society in 2022, the Tswiett-Nernst European Award in 2024, and the Central European Group for Separation Sciences Award in 2025.
He has been repeatedly recognized among the top Italian and global analytical scientists, appearing, for example, on multiple “The Analytical Scientist Power Lists” and in the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” ranking.
