Weekly Newsletter
Dear Readers,
Tomorrow, Halloween will be celebrated in many countries, so enjoy a little molecular magic this week 🧪🎃.
Fitting for the season, let’s take a look at absinthe: this favorite drink of Bohemian Parisians at the end of the 19th century was long banned and, as you might guess, is full of fascinating chemistry and stories—not least the question of what chemical trick created the “fée verte.”
There is also plenty of fascinating chemistry in current research. Some of it is highlighted below in the newsletter. As another example, Jordi Sans, Carlos Alemán, and colleagues in Barcelona, Spain, have developed a fast, green method with strong potential in biomedical sensing and catalysis, using nitrogen-oxygen plasma to turn solid gold salt powder into either tiny metallic gold nanoparticles (~3 nm) or larger gold oxide nanoparticles (~18 nm) without any solvents or stabilizing chemicals. The plasma controls size, shape, and oxidation.
Pankaj Sadavarte, Duke University, Durham, NC, USA, and colleagues found that although electric car production emits significantly more carbon dioxide than conventional vehicles, the total emissions over their lifetime decrease so much that electric cars save CO₂ compared to combustion engines as early as their second year.
Enjoy the rest of the week!👻📜🕯️🌟
