Highlights from 2018
Calendar year 2018 was a productive one for ChemPubSoc Europe’s 15 journals. Manuscript submissions grew by 12 % compared to the previous year, and the number of published articles rose by approximately 5 %, to roughly 9,000 articles. More than 8.9 million full-text downloads signal increased usage and dissemination of ChemPubSoc Europe’s scholarly articles on a global scale. A remarkable 20–30 % growth in usage was seen for ChemCatChem, ChemElectroChem, ChemMedChem, and ChemPlusChem, and roughly 70 % growth for ChemistrySelect and ChemPhotoChem.
Throughout 2018, the publishing group was an enthusiastic sponsor of meetings, symposia, conferences, workshops, and lectures held globally. For further information about ChemPubSoc Europe’s activities in 2018, read the annual report.
In 2019: Author guidelines and preprints
ChemPubSoc Europe journals have updated and harmonized their Notice to Authors to simplify the author experience. Among other noticeable changes to the Author guidelines is a revised policy on preprints. A reminder that ChemPubSoc Europe journals are now considering submissions that have previously been posted to a not-for-profit, subject-based preprint server. Conditions do apply: preprint posting should occur before (or at latest, simultaneously with) submission, authors must declare the prior preprint during submission, and preprints should not be revised on the basis of referee reports obtained by the journal.
Personnel news
Ruben Ragg has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of ChemBioChem and will continue to work in close collaboration with the journal’s Editorial Board and Chairpersons. ChemPlusChem bids farewell to one of its founding editors Marisa Spiniello, who leaves the journal in the capable hands of Jonathan Faiz (Deputy Editor) and Anne Deveson (Acting Editor).
Several of ChemPubSoc Europe’s journals welcomed new Chairpersons in 2019. At Chemistry—A European Journal, Jan-Erling Bäckvall has retired as Chairperson after 15 years of service and passes stewardship to three new Chairs: Kuiling Ding, Kendall N. Houk, and Jean-François Nierengarten. At ChemMedChem, one of the founding Chairpersons, Rainer Metternich, has joined the International Advisory Board and Sangyong Jon has joined the established Chairpersons. ChemPhysChem farewells Christian Amatore, Michel Orrit, and Michael Grätzel who have been invaluable to the journal since they took up their positions in 2011; new Chairpersons Alexander Kuhn, Bert Weckhuysen, and Vivian Wing-Wah Yam are welcomed. ChemPubSoc Europe’s editorial offices in China continue to strengthen ties with the research community in Asia, and in 2019, the ChemistrySelect team is joined by its first colleague based in India.

Chemistry—A European Journal is leading the way with the festivities. To mark the occasion, the editorial team have outfitted the first issue of Chemistry—A European Journal with an image designed in-house. The “Chemistree” conveys the journal’s global reach, and the size of its leaves reflect the frequency with which elements are mentioned in manuscript titles or author-related keywords.
For many, chemistry is a lifelong love affair ignited by a particular element. In a series titled “In My Element“, Chemistry—A European Journal explores the personal relationship of its Editorial Board members with the chemical elements.
Authors, readers, and researchers of all ages are invited to enter the Chemistry—A European Journal IYPT2019-themed artwork competition. ChemViews Magazine is running an element video competition for budding videographers. Submit your 3 minute video by October 1st, 2019, and you may be the lucky winner of an iPad, book vouchers, or other special prizes (terms and conditions apply).
Other promotions include ChemViews Magazine‘s quiz on the chemical elements, a series of element-themed poems composed by Prof. Mario Markus, and a Spotify songlist featuring the chemical elements as selected by the editors of Chemistry–A European Journal. An “element of the day” is highlighted on Twitter with the hashtag #IYPT_WileyChem for Wiley-VCH publications, including journal articles published by ChemPubSoc Europe.
