The second joint symposium of the Asian Editorial Society (ACES) and the German Chemical Society (GDCh) was held on Dec. 10, 2019, in Taipei, Taiwan. In her introductory remarks, Theresa Kueckmann, Editor in Chief of the flagship ACES journal Chemistry – An Asian Journal, explained that the symposium was established to bring together scientists from across Asia and Europe under the auspices of leading chemical societies.

ACES Vice President Kazuyuki Tatsumi then presented the Ryoji Noyori ACES Award to Martin Banwell, Australian National University, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of natural product synthesis and his collaborative, international approach to research. In his subsequent lecture, Banwell spoke about pathways to biologically active systems in natural product synthesis and dedicated his award to the many group members he has worked with over the years.

The second speaker, Kei Murakami, took the audience on a synthetic journey from the serendipitous discovery of a trimerization reaction to the development of new routes to both flat and curved polyaromatic hydrocarbon “nanographene” structures. The first half of the symposium concluded with a panel discussion on preprints, open access, and open research.

The second half of the symposium shifted topics to materials-based research. Vivian W. W. Yam, University of Hong Kong, presented on the supramolecular assembly of discrete metal complexes to nanostructures, followed by Xing Yi Ling, Nanyang Technological University, who described her group’s research in confining gases near a substrate for the detection of gaseous molecules in air through surface-enhanced Raman sensing. The final lecture was delivered by Xiaogang Liu, National University of Singapore, on the use of lanthanide nanomaterials for bioimaging and photonic applications. In her closing remarks, Eva-E. Wille, Wiley-VCH, stressed the importance of international collaboration in a changing world.

The biennial Ryoji Noyori ACES Award was established in 2017 to honor the instrumental role of Nobel Laureate Ryoji Noyori in nurturing the collaborative spirit of ACES, and as the founding Chairman of the Editorial Board of Chemistry – An Asian Journal. The first Ryoji Noyori ACES Awardee was Chi-Ming Che, University of Hong Kong.

The Asian Chemical Editorial Society (ACES) is an organization of 12 major chemical societies in the Asia-Pacific region representing ca. 50,000 members. ACES was founded in 2005 with the mutual aim of creating a modern publishing forum for research in Asia and coordinating future publishing activities among the member societies. High scientific and ethical standards are the basis for the success of the ACES journals, Chemistry – An Asian Journal, Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry, and ChemNanoMat.
