Angewandte Chemie 1/2018: Happy New Year!

Author: Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Diversity and collaboration are essential ingredients for success, argues Neville Compton in his first Editorial as Editor of Angewandte Chemie. The Reviews section comprises contributions by J. C. K. Chu and T. Rovis, who compare strategies for directed C(sp3)–H functionalization, by P. Adelhelm et al. on the advantages, challenges, and surprises on the road from lithium-ion to sodium-ion batteries, and by L. Zhang et al. on oxygen vacancy-mediated photocatalysis of BiOCl. The section is complemented by a Minireview by F. Kallmeier and R. Kempe on manganese complexes for (de)hydrogenation catalysis compared to cobalt and iron catalysts. The Highlight deals with renewable methane generation from carbon dioxide and sunlight (C. Steinlechner, H. Junge).

In the Communications section, B. de Bruin et al. present a catalytic synthesis of dibenzocyclooctene via carbene radical and quinodimethane intermediates (see picture). K. Tanaka et al. succeeded in the preparation of columnar liquid crystals from giant macrocycle mesogens, and H. Grützmacher et al. stabilized tricarbontriphosphide tricyclic radicals by cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes. P. E. Barran et al. revealed the initial steps of amyloidogenic peptide assembly by cold-ion spectroscopy.
