Chemist, author, and former President of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) Hans-Jürgen Quadbeck-Seeger, Germany, celebrates his 80th birthday on May 29, 2019.

Hans-Jürgen Quadbeck-Seeger was born in 1939 in Insterburg, East Prussia (today Chernyakhovsk, Russia). He studied chemistry, physics, and anthropology in Munich, Germany. After obtaining his Ph.D. in the field of organic chemistry in 1967, he started working for BASF, Ludwigshafen, Germany. In 1969, he was appointed Head of the research group for intermediates for the dye and the pharmaceutical sectors.

In 1985, he joined the Board of Executive Directors of a BASF subsidiary, Knoll AG, Ludwigshafen. The same year, he received a professorship from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. From 1990–1997, Quadbeck-Seeger was Research Director at BASF. He also served as Member of the Board of BASF. He has authored several popular science books and holds a large number of patents.

Hans-Jürgen Quadbeck-Seeger was a member of the Senate of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) from 1991 to 1994, President of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) in 1994 and 1995, and a member of the Senate at the Max Planck Society from 1996 to 2000. In 1998, he was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2007, he was named an Honorary Member of the GDCh, the society’s highest honor.
