Luis Oro, University of Zaragoza, Spain, celebrates his 75th birthday on June 13, 2020. Professor Oro’s main research interest is the organometallic chemistry of platinum-group metals, covering synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and homogeneous catalysis.
Luis Oro obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge University, UK, from 1972 to 1973. He served on the faculties of the Universities of Zaragoza, Madrid Complutense, and Santander, all Spain. He became Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in Zaragoza in 1982, where he remained until his retirement in 2015. He continues his research as Professor Emeritus.
Among many other honors, Oro has received the Solvay Prize in 1989, the Sabatier-Catalan Prize in 1997, the Research Prize and Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) in 2007, the EuChemS Award for Service in 2014, and the Lord Lewis Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2018.
Luis Oro is a Member of the German National Academy of Science Leopoldina, of the French Academie des Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea, an Honorary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a Corresponding Member of the Academia das Ciencias de Lisboa, Portugal. He has been President of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) from 2008 to 2011, Vice-President of the European Science Foundation from 1993 to 1998, and President of RSEQ from 2000 to 2005. He has made important contributions to bringing European chemical societies together in what is now Chemistry Europe (formerly ChemPubSoc Europe), of which he is an Honorary Fellow.
