Marc Taillefer, Institut Charles Gerhardt, Montpellier, France, has been awarded the 2012 European Sustainable Chemistry Award by the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS). The award is intended to raise the profile of sustainable chemistry and was presented at the Opening Ceremony of the 4th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress in Prague, Czech Republic, on 26 August, 2012.
Taillefer receives the award in recognition of his work on environmentally sustainable conversion of small molecules into more valuable substances catalyzed by copper and iron molecular complexes. This renaissance of “Ullmann type arylations” is now often used at the academic or industrial level and avoids the use of more expensive catalysts based on palladium.
Marc Taillefer gained his Ph.D. in 1989 from University Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France. After a post-doctoral position at the Technical University Munich, Germany, with Professor Wolfgang A. Herrmann, he joined the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, National Centre for Scientific Research) and started his research at the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier, France. Since 2004, he has been CNRS Research Director and head of the research group on Molecular Synthesis Methodology at the Institut Charles Gerhardt. He also serves as vice-president and chairman of the Organic Chemistry Division of the Société Chimique de France.
