This person was born in Cairo, Egypt, to British parents. After developing an early interest in chemistry, the person studied at the two oldest universities in the UK. During their academic career they taught Margaret Thatcher, the future Prime Minister of the UK.

This person is best known for the study of biologically interesting molecules.

They received many awards during their lifetime and since their death in the 1990s, they have been honored by having their face printed on two different sets of British stamps.
