The Society of Polymer Science Japan (SPSJ) Wiley Award has been presented to Dr. Teruaki Hayakawa, Graduate School of Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Dr. Kotaro Satoh, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University, both Japan.

Dr. Hayakawa is honored for research on the synthesis and structural control of polymers for nanofabrication, and Dr. Satoh for work on the precision polymerization of vinyl monomers by controlling different reaction mechanisms.

The prize is awarded to members of the SPSJ under 45 years of age to recognize creative and outstanding research in the field of either polymer chemistry or polymer physics. This year’s award was presented at the 64th Symposium on Macromolecules at Tohoku University, Japan, on September 16, 2015.

Teruaki Hayakawa Teruaki Hayakawa
studied at the engineering faculty at Yamagata University, Japan, and received his Ph.D. there in 2000. He then worked as a researcher at the Center of Macromolecular Technology, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan. Today, he is Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.

His research focuses on polymers and polymer thin films, materials for nanolithography, especially polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-containing block copolymers (BCPs), as well as high thermal-conductive epoxy resins.

Kotaro SatohKotaro Satoh studied polymer chemistry at Kyoto University, Japan, and received his Ph.D. in engineering there in 2000 under the supervision of Mitsuo Sawamoto. In 2004, he became Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry, Nagoya University, Japan, and was promoted to his current post as Associate Professor in 2007.

His research interests include the development of new polymer materials by means of well-controlled polymerizations, living polymerizations, and stereospecific polymerizations.
