Carbon nanodots (C-dots) are promising semiconductor nanoparticles. One popular way to prepare C-dots is laser ablation. The C-dots are formed by the ablation of a graphite target or diluted graphite powder on a passivating medium.
Owing to the various interactions that can arise during this process, the choice of the passivating medium is very important. It must be physicochemically stable during the irradiation process and afterwards it must offer good stabilisation to the C-dots that have been formed.
A collaboration between Jackson D. Scholten, Jairton Dupont, and Ricardo R. B. Correia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, has found that imidazolium-based ionic liquids are a good medium for fluorescent C-dots produced by laser ablation and provide good stabilization. The team was also able to show that different ionic liquids could influence the mean size of the particles and the fluorescence properties of the C-dots.
