In this issue, S. Dehnen et al. review the synthesis of crystalline chalcogenides in ionic liquids. What properties do such compounds have and how are they relevant for materials research? In a Minireview, Z. Yu et al. summarize the C-alkylation of ketones and related compounds by alcohols in transition-metal catalyzed dehydrogenations. The Highlight deals with the use of engineered enzymes to extend the structural diversity of polyketides (J. Kundert, T. A. M. Gulder).

In the Communications section, J. D. Wuest et al. show how to build giant carbocycles by reversible C–C bond formation (see picture). S. L. Cockroft et al. wonder whether dispersion forces can govern aromatic stacking in an organic solvent. D. Milstein et al. present a rechargeable hydrogen storage system based on the dehydrogenative coupling of ethylenediamine with ethanol. G. A. Morris et al. developed a method called PSYCHEDELIC for extracting individual coupling constants from crowded 1H NMR spectra.
