Towards A Greenhouse Gas Neutral German Chemistry

Towards A Greenhouse Gas Neutral German Chemistry

Author: ChemistryViews

The Association of German Engineers (VDI, Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) and the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI, Verband der Chemischen Industrie) have jointly founded the climate protection platform “Chemistry4Climate“. It has now started its work with a first discussion round of experts. Over the next few years, the platform is expected to provide answers to the question of under what conditions German chemistry can become greenhouse gas neutral by 2050.

The chemical industry cannot solve many of the challenges that arise on the way to a CO2-neutral chemical production alone. Experts from, e.g., relevant industries, environmental organizations, chemical companies, and politics are, therefore, working together.

The prerequisites for a greenhouse gas neutral chemistry are also the core topics of the platform work. These include solutions to the questions: How can large quantities of cheap, renewable electricity be made available for the chemical industry?, How can a better circular economy and greater use of biomass contribute to transforming the current fossil carbon base of chemistry?, What should be the supporting role of policymakers through regulatory adjustments?
