Online Access to Biochemical Pathways

Author: ChemistryViews.org

In 1965 Dr. Gerhard Michal, Boehringer Mannheim GmbH (now Roche Diagnostics), Germany, created two wall charts providing an overview of the chemical reactions of cells in various species and organs. Part I, called Metabolic Pathways, is a classic pathways overview and part II, called Cellular and Molecular Processes, is a detailed presentation of the higher molecular processes within the cell. Both are clear, visual diagrams.

Michal has been improving and updating these Biochemical Pathways ever since. More than 700,000 hard copies of the wall charts have been distributed.
In 1999, a book with the detailed pathways, “Biochemical Pathways: An Atlas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology”, was published by Michal and in 2012, he published a revised edition together with Professor Dietmar Schomburg, Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina, Braunschweig, Germany.

Through collaboration with Roche, now an electronic version is freely available. It allows the user to search the Biochemical Pathways with keywords, to set focus effects, to activate filtering functions, and to zoom in on the details and elements of interest.
