The ChemistryViews team wishes you a peaceful, healthy, and successful New Year 2026 full of great things! ✨🎉

Thank you for reading and supporting us, the science magazine of Chemistry Europe. We look forward to staying connected with you and to many more interactions in the coming year.

We look forward to featuring new topics and scientists in 2026. The year begins with several highlights:

  • In February 2026, the new Class of Chemistry Europe Fellows will be announced. The Fellows program recognizes members of the Chemistry Europe societies for their outstanding achievements and contributions to Chemistry Europe and their service to at least one member society.
  • 2026 also marks key anniversaries for several sister journals:
        – 20 years of ChemMedChem
        – 10 years of ChemistrySelect
        –   5 years of Chemistry-Methods and Analysis & Sensing
  • and for Chemistry Europe Societies:
       – the Česká společnost chemická (ČSCH) was founded in 1866
       – the Swiss Chemical Society (SCG) was founded in 1901
       – the Portugal Sociedade Portuguesa de Química (SPQ) was founded in 1911
and no Chemistry Europe society, but the American Chemical Society (ACS) was established in 1876

The number 2026 is also exciting:

  • 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10  →  1 + 0 = 1
We hope we all have a number-one year!
  • 2026 = 2 × 1013
1013 is a prime number, so 2026 is the product of a small even number and a large prime.
  • and the Roman numerals MMXXVI look quite nice

Notable chemists are celebrating milestone birthdays, including:

  • Stanislao Cannizzaro: July 13, 1826 (Cannizzaro reaction).
  • Aaron Klug: August 11, 1926 (Nobel Prize–winning chemist and biophysicist).
  • Amedeo Avogadro: August 9, 1776 (Avogadro’s law and the basis of mole concept).
  • Robert Bunsen: December 31, 1811 (Bunsen Burner).
  • Linus Pauling: February 28, 1901 (Chemical Bonding, Nobel Laureate).
  • Ahmed Zewail: February 26, 1946 (Nobel laureate for femtochemistry).

January 1 is typically the time when new presidents take office; with regard to the Chemistry Europe societies, these are as follows:

  • Dr. Ruth Bieringer, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies, has been elected President of the German Chemical Society (GDCh)

Best wishes,
Your ChemistryViews team
