Starting on the 18th of March 2012 until the 21st, the 14th Spring Symposium of the Young Chemists Forum (JCF) of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) took place in Rostock, Germany. Almost 400 people participated in the conference and had the possibility to present their work orally or in a poster session. Nearly 40 % of the young scientists were guests from other countries, e.g., USA, Poland, Turkey, and Russia.

In addition to the presentation sessions, three well-known scientists were invited as speakers. Professor Manfred Reetz, Max Planck Institute, Mühlheim, Germany, Professor Karl Anker Jørgensen, Center for Catalysis, Aarhus, Denmark, and Professor Gernot Frenking, Philipps University, Marburg, Germany, talked about the latest results of their impressive research, but also showed great interest in the work of the young chemists. On a boat trip to the Baltic Sea Resort Warnemünde and on a guided city tour all participants became acquainted with the region.

A special event during the symposium was the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Young Chemists Forum of the GDCh. Different guests, including the president of the GDCh Professor Barbara Albert, the executive director of the GDCh Professor Wolfram Koch and the speaker of the Young German Physical Society Anna Bakenecker, gave greetings and congratulations to all young chemists. The ceremony was closed with an experimental lecture of the GDCh Senior Scientist Expert Dr. Gerhard Heywang, who presented several known and unknown facts about eggs in funny experiments. The lecture was followed by a champagne reception, which gave all attending young chemists the opportunity for scientific and cultural exchange. The grand finale of the festivity was a fireworks display after the conference dinner.

The next Spring Symposium of the Young Chemists Forum will take place in Berlin from the 6th to the 9th of March in 2013.
