The article is part of a very successful chemistry education series in our magazine: In each issue, interesting experiments are presented which are applicable in chemistry classes; and in addition: I like Gummy Bears.
What is the article about?
In human beings, azo dyes are usually split into amines. Some of them are hazardous and that’s why only some of these substances are permitted for food. Brilliant Black BN is one of the non-hazardous food dyes (known as E 151) and with it and Gummy Bears there are funny and instructive experiments in school possible.
