The Karl Winnacker Institute of the DECHEMA, Frankfurt, Germany, celebrates its 50th anniversary on 9 December 2011. The institute was founded in 1961 and provides a place for engineers, chemists and materials scientists to conduct research all under one roof. Today, the institute has about 70 scientists, graduate students, and technical staff who are involved in basic and preindustrial research.

The research activities are mainly aimed at developing sustainable solutions for energy conversion and storage, corrosion protection, recovery of inorganic recyclable materials and the integration of chemical and biotechnological production. Many of the projects are carried out jointly with industry partners.

Today’s meeting to commemorate the anniversary of the Institute will include addresses from, among others, the Chairman of DECHEMA, Dr. Hans Jürgen Wernicke, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) President Professor Matthias Kleiner, the Chief Executive of the AIF, Professor Stefanie Heiden, and the Secretary General of the Volkswagen Foundation Dr. Wilhelm Krull.
