Martin Brudermüller’s Successor as CEO of BASF

As decided by the Supervisory Board, Dr. Markus Kamieth (53; pictured above) will assume the position of Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF with effect from the end of the Annual Meeting on April 25, 2024. He has been a member of the Board of Executive Directors since 2017. He succeeds Dr. Martin Brudermüller (62), whose contract expires in April and who has been Chairman since 2018 and a member of the Board of Executive Directors since 2006. He is expected to become Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Mercedes-Benz.

Dr. Katja Scharpwinkel (54, pictured on the right) succeeds Dr. Melanie Maas-Brunner (55), who informed the Supervisory Board of her decision not to renew her existing board contract, which expires on January 31, 2024, and leave BASF. Melanie Maas-Brunner has been a member of the Executive Board since 2021 and is currently responsible for Corporate Research and the Industrial Relations Director of the Board. Katja Scharpwinkel will be the new Industrial Relations Director responsible for the Ludwigshafen site, Germany, and Europe

Dr. Stephan Kothrade (56), a member of the Executive Board since March 2023, will take over responsibility for Corporate Research from Melanie Maas-Brunner as of January 1, 2024. From March, he will also assume responsibility for China, South and East Asia as well as Asia megaprojects, which were previously the responsibility of Markus Kamieth.

 

Markus Kamieth, born in Dinslaken, Germany, in 1970, studied chemistry and received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Essen, Germany, in 1998. He joined BASF in 1999. He has held various positions and was most recently responsible for Dispersions & Resins; Catalysts; Coatings; Performance Chemicals; Greater China Region Greater China Region; South & East Asia, ASEAN & ANZ Region; and ANZ; Mega Projects Asia.

Katja Scharpwinkel, born in Hagen, Germany, in 1969, studied chemistry at Münster University, Germany, and received her Ph.D. in 1996. After positions at Ciba Spezialchemikalien GmbH, Lampertheim, Germany, and Cognis GmbH, Düsseldorf, Germany, she joined BASF in 2011 as Head of Sales Formulation Technologies Europe, BASF Personal Care and Nutrition GmbH, Monheim, Germany. Since 2020 she is President Region EMEA, BASF SE, Ludwigshafen.
