Growing Azolla to produce sustainable protein feed: the effect of differing species and CO 2 concentrations on biomass productivity and chemical composition

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Paul Brouwer, Henriette Schluepmann, Klaas GJ Nierop, Janneke Elderson, Peter K Bijl, Ingrid van der Meer, Willem de Visser, Gert‐Jan Reichart, Sjef Smeekens, Adrie van der Werf

Abstract BACKGROUND Since available arable land is limited and nitrogen fertilizers pollute the environment, cropping systems ought to be developed that do not rely on them. Here we investigate the rapidly growing, N2‐fixing Azolla/Nostoc symbiosis for its potential productivity and chemical composition to determine its potential as protein feed. RESULTS In a small...

Co‐administration of kla‐TAT peptide and iRGD to enhance the permeability on A549 3D multiple sphere cells and accumulation on xenograft mice

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Cuihua Hu, Xiaolong Chen, Yibing Huang, Yuxin Chen

Abstract To enhance the anticancer activity, tumor penetration ability of the hybrid anticancer peptide, in this study, a TAT (RKKRRQRRR) peptide modified kla peptide (KLAKLAKKLAKLAK, with all D‐amino acids), named kla‐TAT, was co‐administrated with the homing/penetrating peptide iRGD which could enhance the permeability of chemical drug in solid tumor and tumor vessel by co‐administration. In this study, the nonsmall cell lung...

Synthesis, activity, and docking studies of eugenol‐based glucosides as new agents against Candida sp.

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Taciane Maíra Magalhães Hipólito, Guilherme Tadeu Lemos Bastos, Thúlio Wliandon Lemos Barbosa, Thiago Belarmino Souza, Luiz Felipe Leomil Coelho, Amanda Latércia Tranches Dias, Ihosvany Camps Rodríguez, Marcelo Henrique dos Santos, Danielle Ferreira Dias, Lucas Lopardi Franco, Diogo Teixeira Carvalho

Seventeen new synthetic derivatives of eugenol (6, 8–15 and 8′‐15′) were planned following literature reports on antifungal activities of nitroeugenol and eugenol glucoside. The anti‐Candida activity of these compounds was investigated by in vitro assay, and the cytotoxicity evaluation was performed with the most active compounds. The peracetylated glucosides presented better biological results than their hydroxylated analogues. The glucoside 11, a...

How home ventilation rates affect health: A literature review

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): W. J. Fisk

Abstract This paper reviews studies of the relationships between ventilation rates (VRs) in homes and occupant health, primarily respiratory health. Five cross‐sectional studies, seven case‐control studies, and eight intervention studies met inclusion criteria. Nearly all studies controlled for a range of potential confounders and most intervention studies included placebo conditions. Just over half of studies reported one or more...

Variability of pyrethroid concentrations on hard surface kitchen flooring in occupied housing

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): J. M. Starr, S. E. Graham, W. Li, A. A. Gemma, M. K. Morgan

Abstract Pyrethroids are a class of neurotoxic insecticides, and some studies have used single‐time wiping of hard surface flooring to estimate indoor pyrethroid concentrations. Considering that human activities may affect concentrations, knowledge of temporal variability is needed to reduce the uncertainty of exposure estimates that are calculated using wipe sampling of pyrethroids in occupied housing. During weeks one, two, and...

Novel quinazolin‐4(3 H )‐one linked to 1,2,3‐triazoles: Synthesis and anticancer activity

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Maliheh Safavi, Arsalan Ashtari, Faezeh Khalili, Seyedeh Sara Mirfazli, Mina Saeedi, Sussan Kabudanian Ardestani, Parviz Rashidi Ranjbar, Maliheh Barazandeh Tehrani, Bagher Larijani, Mohammad Mahdavi

In this work, a wide range of novel quinazolin‐4(3H)‐one linked to 1,2,3‐triazoles was designed, synthesized, and evaluated against a panel of three human breast (MDA‐MB‐231, MCF‐7, T‐47D), lung (A549), and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines. Our results revealed that the anticancer activity of the synthesized compounds was selectively affected by the presence of methoxy group on the linker between quinazolinone and 1,2,3‐triazole moieties....

The molecular mechanism of two coreceptor binding site antibodies X5 and 17b neutralizing HIV ‐1: Insights from molecular dynamics simulation

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Yan Zhang, Jingjing Guo, Le Huang, Jiaqi Tian, Xiaojun Yao, Huanxiang Liu

The coreceptor binding site of gp120 plays an important role in HIV entry into host cell. X5 and 17b are typical coreceptor binding site antibodies with the ability to broadly neutralize HIV. Thus, here, to study the neutralizing mechanism of two antibodies and identify the source of two antibodies with different neutralizing ability, we performed molecular dynamics simulations for the complexes of X5 and 17b with gp120 and CD4. The...

Development of coumarin–benzofuran hybrids as versatile multitargeted compounds for the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Asha Hiremathad, Karam Chand, Rangappa S. Keri

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive deterioration of memory and cognition. The evidenced multifactorial nature of AD has been considered the main reason for the absence of cure so far. Therefore, the development of novel hybrids to treat the disease is very much essential. Focusing on this, a novel series of coumarin–benzofuran hybrids have been designed...

Molecular description of α‐keto‐based inhibitors of cruzain with activity against Chagas disease combining 3D‐QSAR studies and molecular dynamics

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Ádria P. B. Saraiva, Ricardo M. Miranda, Renan P. P. Valente, Jéssica O. Araújo, Rutelene N. B. Souza, Clauber H. S. Costa, Amanda R. S. Oliveira, Michell O. Almeida, Antonio F. Figueiredo, João E. V. Ferreira, Cláudio Nahum Alves, Kathia M. Honorio

In this work, a group of α–keto‐based inhibitors of the cruzain enzyme with anti‐chagas activity was selected for a three‐dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship study (3D‐QSAR) combined with molecular dynamics (MD). Firstly, statistical models based on Partial Least Square (PLS) regression were developed employing comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA)...

3‐Aminomethyl pyridine chalcone derivatives: Design, synthesis, DNA binding and cytotoxic studies

Published: 19 May 2018

Author(s): Sunil Dutt Durgapal, Rina Soni, Shweta Umar, Balakrishnan Suresh, Shubhangi S. Soman

Herein we report design, synthesis, and anticancer activity of compounds 6a–h and 11a–j. Compounds 6a–f were designed based on 3‐aminomethyl pyridine attached to different acetamide derivatives and in compounds 6g–h it was attached to coumarin moiety. Coumarin containing compounds 6g–h showed very poor anticancer activity against both A549 (Lungs cancer cell line), and MCF‐7 (Breast cancer cell line) cell lines in MTT assay. Compounds 11a–j were designed as...
