A facile route to prepare homogeneous silicone resin doped with titanium

Published: 19 April 2019

Author(s): Jianjun Chen, Zien Fu, Hengchao Huang, Zhonghua Chen, Xingrong Zeng

ABSTRACT A facile route was introduced to prepare homogeneous silicone resin doped with titanium hybrid with high refractive index (RI). Specifically, the hybrids were obtained from the transesterification of hydroxyl‐phenyl‐vinyl silicone resin and titanium isopropoxide under anhydrous conditions. The structures of hybrid silicone and their corresponding intermediates (hydroxyl‐phenyl‐vinyl silicone) were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR, 29Si NMR) as well as...

Fabrication and electrochemical characterization of polyimide‐derived carbon nanofibers for self‐standing supercapacitor electrode materials

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Nam Koo Han, Ji Hyung Ryu, Do Un Park, Jae Hak Choi, Young Gyu Jeong

ABSTRACT We report the electrochemical performance of aromatic polyimide (PI)‐based carbon nanofibers (CNFs), which were fabricated by electrospinning, imidization, and carbonization process of poly(amic acid) (PAA) as an aromatic PI precursor. For the purpose, PAA solution was electrospun into nanofibers, which were then converted into CNFs via one‐step (PAA‐CNFs) or two‐step heat treatment (PI‐CNFs) of imidization and carbonization. The FTIR and Raman spectra demonstrated a successful...

Curing of a tetrafluoroethylene–propylene elastomer with high‐vinyl polybutadiene rubber and peroxide

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Chuanbo Cong, Qingkun Liu, Peng Wei, Xiaoyu Meng, Qiong Zhou

ABSTRACT A cocuring agent is necessary for tetrafluoroethylene–propylene elastomer (FEPM), which cannot be cured by peroxide alone. We observed that high‐vinyl polybutadiene rubber (HVBR) could be used as a cocuring agent for FEPM. The structure and properties of FEPM–HVBR blend vulcanizates were investigated by 13C‐NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, swelling tests, tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. This research showed that HVBR significantly...

Polyacrylonitrile–poly(1‐vinyl pyrrolidone‐co‐vinyl acetate) blend based gel polymer electrolytes incorporated with sodium iodide salt for dye‐sensitized solar cell applications

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Norshahirah Mohamad Saidi, Hong Ming Ng, Fatin Saiha Omar, Shahid Bashir, K. Ramesh, S. Ramesh

ABSTRACT New gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) were prepared via the blending of a polyacrylonitrile polymer and a poly(1‐vinyl pyrrolidone‐co‐vinyl acetate) copolymer. The sodium iodide (NaI) salt concentration was varied for each GPE sample. From ionic conductivity (σ) studies, we observed that the sample with a 40 wt % NaI salt content (N40) showed the highest σ of 3.54 × 10−3 ± 0.05 S/cm at room temperature, and all of the GPE samples obeyed Arrhenius behavior. The dielectric properties of...

Organic Semiconductors for Photothermal Therapy and Photoacoustic Imaging

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Xuemei Wang, Zhongmin Geng, Hailin Cong, Youqing Shen, Bing Yu

Abstract In recent years, semiconducting polymer nanoparticles (SPNs) have been attracting considerable attention because of their outstanding characteristics such as higher light and thermal stability. They are widely used in fields of biomedicine such as photoacoustic (PA) imaging (PAI), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT). PAI, a new imaging modality based on PA effects, shows great promise in biomedical applications. SPNs that display strong optical absorbance in the...

Genome‐Scale CRISPR/Cas9 Screening Reveals Squalene Epoxidase as a Susceptibility Factor for Cytotoxicity of Malformin A1

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Yukio Koizumi, Jun Fukushima, Yayoi Kobayashi, Ayumi Kadowaki, Miyuki Natsui, Tomokazu Yamaguchi, Yumiko Imai, Toshihiro Sugiyama, Keiji Kuba

Abstract Malformin A1 (MA1) is a fungus‐produced cyclic pentapeptide. MA1 exhibits teratogenicity to plants, fibrinolysis‐enhancing activity, and cytotoxicity to mammalian cells. To clarify the cytotoxic mechanism of MA1, we screened for the genes involved in the cytotoxicity of MA1 in monocytoid U937 cells by using a CRISPR/Cas9‐based genome‐wide knockout library. Screening was performed by positive selection for cells that were resistant to MA1 treatment, and single guide RNAs (sgRNAs)...

Photoactivable Elimination of Tumorigenic Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells by Using a Lectin–Doxorubicin Prodrug Conjugate

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Johann Dion, Fumi Minoshima, Sayoko Saito, Kayo Kiyoi, Kayo Hasehira, Hiroaki Tateno

Abstract Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are attractive resources for regenerative medicine, but medical applications are hindered by their tumorigenic potential. Previously, a hPSC‐specific lectin probe, rBC2LCN, was identified through comprehensive glycome analysis by using high‐density lectin microarrays. Herein, a lectin–doxorubicin (DOX) prodrug conjugate, with controllable photolysis activation for the elimination of tumorigenic human induced pluripotent stem cells, has been...

Ordered and Isomerically Stable Bicyclic Peptide Scaffolds Constrained through Cystine Bridges and Proline Turns

Published: 18 April 2019

Author(s): Ping Lin, Hongwei Yao, Jun Zha, Yibing Zhao, Chuanliu Wu

Abstract Bicyclic peptides are attractive scaffolds for the design of potent protein binders and new therapeutics. However, peptide bicycles constrained through disulfide bonds are rarely stable or tolerant to sequence manipulation owing to disulfide isomerization, especially for peptides lacking a regular secondary structure. Herein, we report the discovery and identification of a class of bicyclic peptide scaffolds with ordered but irregular secondary structures. These peptides have a...
