A Biomimetic Approach for Spatially Controlled Cell Membrane Engineering Using Fusogenic Spherical Nucleic Acid

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Minjie Lin, Yuanyuan Chen, Sisi Zhao, Rui Tang, Zhou Nie, Hang Xing

Abstract Engineering of the cell plasma membrane using functional DNA is important for studying and controlling cellular behaviors. However, most efforts to apply artificial DNA interactions on cells are limited to external membrane surface due to the lack of suitable synthetic tools to engineer the intracellular side, which impedes many applications in cell biology. Inspired by the natural extracellular vesicle‐cell fusion process, we have developed a fusogenic spherical nucleic acid...

Laminar Fluid Mixing in Micromixers: Description of Pull‐Push Effects

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Arash Haghighinia, Salman Movahedirad, Babak Kamali Doust Azad

Abstract A numerical study was performed on laminar mixing of fluids by means of embedded microbarriers against the flow direction in two three‐dimensional T‐micromixers. Two microchannels with different obstacle arrangements were considered, and the effect of volumetric flow rate Q on two‐stream pull‐push motion was investigated. With increasing Q and distance of the barriers to the sidewalls K, different vortices and fluid movement patterns develop in the two micromixers. Maximum mass...

Application of Nanotechnology in the Production of Biohydrogen: A Review

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Trinath Biswal, Krushna Prasad Shadangi, Prakash Kumar Sarangi

Abstract Hydrogen is an outstanding source of energy that does not create any hostile carbon footprint as it produces only water during combustion. The application of nanotechnology is one of the recent advanced technologies used to enhance the rate of hydrogen production from biomass. The use of nanoparticles (NPs) in the conversion process enhances this rate. Biological methods such as dark fermentation and photobiological route of conversion of biomass to hydrogen are the most suitable and...

Enhanced transport properties of Sn‐substituted proton‐conducting BaZr0.8Sc0.2O3–δ ceramic materials

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Inna A. Zvonareva, Anna V. Kasyanova, Artem P. Tarutin, Gennady K. Vdovin, Julia G. Lyagaeva, Dmitry A. Medvedev

Abstract High‐temperature proton conductors based on acceptor‐doped barium zirconate exhibit excellent chemical stability in atmospheres containing CO2 or H2O. However, due to their refractory nature, these conductors have a low grain growth rate, which negatively affects the overall electrical conductivity. A possible strategy for increasing the ionic conductivity of zirconates lies in the partial substitution of Zr‐ions with other isovalent dopants. In this work, we carried out systematic...

Accessing Unsymmetrically Linked Heterocycles through Stereoselective Palladium‐Catalyzed Domino Cyclization

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Ramon Arora, José F. Rodríguez, Andrew Whyte, Mark Lautens

Abstract A palladium‐catalyzed strategy is presented to synthesize unsymmetrically linked heterocycles within stereoselective tetrasubstituted olefins. This reaction is proposed to occur via a vinyl‐PdII intermediate capable of initiating the cyclization of various alkyne‐tethered nucleophiles. Products are formed in up to 96 % yield and excellent stereoselectivities are obtained using low catalyst loadings. This transformation was scalable up to 1 mmol and mechanistic studies suggest a...

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Zhongjing Shen, Hualong Peng, Zhiqiang Xiong, Huili Yang, Zihao Huang, Shuyi Huang, Chongbo Liu

Abstract The derivatives of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) in which various metal and/or metal oxides are uniformly distributed in porous carbon materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their special characteristics such as large specific surface area, adjustable pore structure, highly ordered pores, and uniform metal sites. Presently, the electromagnetic absorption property of MOF derivatives is primarily enhanced by changing their metal ions, and it is still a challenge to...

3D Binary Mesocrystals from Anisotropic Nanoparticles

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Christian Jenewein, Jonathan Avaro, Christian Appel, Marianne Liebi, Helmut Cölfen

Abstract Binary mesocrystals offer the combination of nanocrystal properties in an ordered superstructure. Here, we demonstrate the simultaneous self‐assembly of platinum and iron oxide nanocubes into micrometer‐sized 3D mesocrystals using the gas‐phase diffusion technique. By the addition of minor amounts of a secondary particle type tailored to nearly identical size, shape and surface chemistry, we were able to promote a random incorporation of foreign particles into a self‐assembling host...

Vacancy Modulating Co3Sn2S2 Topological Semimetal for Aqueous Zinc‐Ion Batteries

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Yuwei Zhao, Yongbin Zhu, Feng Jiang, Yiyao Li, You Meng, Ying Guo, Qing Li, Zhaodong Huang, Shaoce Zhang, Rong Zhang, Johnny C. Ho, Qianfan Zhang, Weishu Liu, Chunyi Zhi

Abstract Weyl semimetals (WSMs) with high electrical conductivity and suitable carrier density near the Fermi level are enticing candidates for aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs), meriting from topological surface states (TSSs). We propose a WSM Co3Sn2S2 cathode for AZIBs showing a discharge plateau around 1.5 V. By introducing Sn vacancies, extra redox peaks from the Sn4+/Sn2+ transition appear, which leads to more Zn2+ transfer channels and active sites promoting charge‐storage kinetics and...

Tumor‐Cell‐Specific Targeting of Ibrutinib: Introducing Electrostatic Antibody‐Inhibitor Conjugates (AiCs)

Published: 25 November 2021

Author(s): Andreas Faust, Nicole Bäumer, Alina Schlütermann, Manuel Becht, Lilo Greune, Christiane Geyer, Christian Rüter, Renato Margeta, Lisa Wittmann, Petra Dersch, Georg Lenz, Wolfgang E. Berdel, Sebastian Bäumer

Abstract Ibrutinib is an inhibitor of Bruton's tyrosine kinase that has been approved for the treatment of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma and Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia and is connected with toxicities. To minimize its toxicities, we linked ibrutinib to a cell‐targeted, internalizing antibody. To this end, we synthesized a poly‐anionic derivate, ibrutinib‐Cy3.5, that retains full functionality. This anionic inhibitor is complexed by our...
